Let's Talk Social Capital
Social media is like entering another dimension—different social norms on every platform with things changing regularly. "Keeping up" can be exhausting. After working in this dimension regularly for the past seven years between internships & adult jobs, I thought I would share some tips, specifically for Instagram. These are some tips that ring true no matter what algorithm changes get thrown your way:
Don't think too hard.
When I moved into my first apartment, I was shocked at how well the furniture and decor went together. It was very simple, I just started collecting things I like. If you apply this thought process to your posting, you will be posting things that you want to see & it turns out others might too. Being overly curated will get rid of your voice and perspective.
Channel your inner stand-up comedian.
Stand-ups have a great way of entertaining while educating. They can also tell a captivating story about something seemly normal while maintaining their personality. Your content doesn't necessarily have to be funny; share your perspective because others will relate when you show your humanity.
It's called social media on purpose.
It sounds silly to write this but interact with people. Respond to comments, answer those DM's, repost photos you get tagged in - not only does it give your content without trying, but you also make others feel special!
Social distance with social media.
Hear me out; I'm telling you to get off the app I'm currently "promoting." Create some space to help you tap into a different creative space & get inspired by the world around you. Turn off the notifications, step away from the endless scroll & do that laundry you've been putting off.
Some nuts and bolts
Always use new features! Instagram will reward you for it in the feed.
Take up some extra space & post vertical photos.
Put a face to a name. Whether you're a brand, business, or person, people remember people interacting with you online, not robots. They love seeing behind the scenes or real things.
Engage with the accounts you like. While "bookmarking being the number one thing being rewarded by the algorithm" is a myth, the algorithm will put the accounts you interact with in your feed. It also does really help small businesses' and creator's growth.
