Just For Laughs & Quiet Contemplation
The Good Place
My experience with philosophy before watching The Good Place:
#1. It was the only class I have ever fallen asleep in.
#2 There is a theory that we could all be living a dream & I seriously contemplated writing "this could all be a dream, so I hope I dream myself an A" on my final exam essay. (Sadly, I did not... but surprisingly, I did pass.)
I'm glad this show was better than Philosophy 101. There are fun characters, quick one-liners, and surprises. This leaves Netflix wondering if I'm still watching after binging the 30-minute episodes.
Like other shows that Mike Schur has created (Parks & Rec, The Office, Brooklyn Nine-Nine), the cast and crew have so much enthusiasm and attention to detail. They even made a podcast putting a magnifying glass on the whole process, interviewing writers, set designers, cast, philosophy advisors, producers, composers, assistants, etc.
I love that while this is just a show that brings me joy, it's also a reminder that every person on your team has an important role to play.
